To mark Holocaust Memorial Day, Noel Russell will give a talk based on his compelling new book, The Saved and the Spurned: Northern Ireland, Vienna and the Holocaust, He’ll discuss how, in August 1938, several hundred Jews tried to escape Nazi-occupied Vienna using a Stormont scheme aimed at tackling chronic local unemployment by offering financial support to employers who could create jobs. Through the scheme, a small number of Jewish people were allowed to come to Northern Ireland but the majority were rejected – more than 125 of these Jewish men, women and children were murdered in the Holocaust. This talk will describe what happened to those who came to Northern Ireland – and to those who did not – and how local activists saved several refugees.
