This exhibition preserves and celebrates the legacy of Cara-Friend, Northern Ireland’s oldest LGBTQIA+ charitable organisation. Founded in 1974, eight years before the decriminalisation of homosexuality in the north, Cara-Friend provided a lifeline to thousands of individuals through letter-writing, its helpline, in-person befriending and by providing information.
This photographic exhibition, containing 21 portraits taken by photographer Timothy O’Connell, explores the experiences of Cara-Friend volunteers from the 1970s and 1980s in their own words. The exhibition also includes clips from audio-visual interviews and items from Cara-Friend archives.
This project has been made possible thanks to generous funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and the players who made the funding possible.
This exhibition is free to attend.
