Automatic Writings: An Illustrated Talk by Farhad O’Neill

Join us for a fascinating talk by artist Farhad O’Neill, as he discusses the inspiration and artistic processes behind his exhibition, Automatic Writings, which is showing in The Linen Hall from 3-31 October.

‘This is an exhibition of abstract typography/calligraphy based on music. This style of drawing/writing is an interpretation of musical line/gesture and structure as it applies from monophonic and polyphonic music. This body of work is the result of twelve years of drawing in this stream of conscious style, between 2007 and 2019. I ended up with a huge corpus of work, which I began curate in 2019. Overall, the style of drawing looks eastern, but it is culturally non-specific. The types of music which influenced the work include classical European chamber music, electronic music, jazz music and symphonic music for opera and ballet.’ Farhad O’Neill

About the Artist

Farhad O’Neill was born to a Belfast mother and a Parsi father and was raised in Canada.  He relocated to Belfast in the early 1990s as an Irish Citizen and began and maintained an artistic practice and studio in the Conway Mill until 2004.  His practice is represented as public works in many locations in West Belfast and abroad.  From 2004 until 2022 he was based in Canada and continued his practice with major artist landmarks including the Corpus et Spiritus sculpture commission and the commission for the Marian Doors for St. Michael’s Cathedral Basilica.  In January 2022 he returned to Belfast for good and has a studio located in Belfast City Centre.
