Founded in 1788, The Linen Hall is an archive, accredited museum and the oldest Library in

Belfast. The political collection at The Linen Hall began in 1968 with one civil rights leaflet,

and today contains some 350K items, encompassing all shades of opinion, and containing

material from all perspectives. The collection includes a wealth of material relating to the

movement for civil rights in Northern Ireland.

Job Purpose:

                                               

The Linen Hall has secured funding under a National Archives Archives Revealed grant for We shall overcome: unlocking civil rights archives at The Linen Hall.

 

Working with the Deputy Librarian, the Project Archivist will sort, catalogue and make accessible the archive of the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association, its Chairperson P.J. McClean, and ephemera collected contemporaneously over decades to increase accessibility and enhance preservation.

 

Main Duties:

  • Production of a cataloguing handbook describing how the archival material should be catalogued to meet requirements of cataloguing standard ISAD(G)
  • Appraisal and arrangement of the archive material
  • Cataloguing of the archive material in line with standards and relevant data protection legislation
  • Archival packaging and storage of the archive material
  • Provision of timely reports as required
  • Supporting Deputy Librarian with project related work of interns and volunteers
  • Supporting engagement with the archive material
  • To advise the Deputy Librarian on Archive Accreditation

 

Person Specification:

 

Essential:

 

To be qualified to degree level in a relevant discipline; applicants without a degree but with the requisite experience will be considered

To hold a recognised archival and/or records management qualification, or equivalent experience

To have two years’ experience of working in an archive or records management environment applying archival and/or records management principles, policies and practices

To have proven experience of scoping, appraising and cataloguing a diverse range of archival documents

To have working knowledge of the International Standard for Archival Description (General) – ISAD(G)

To have working knowledge of data protection legislation

To have experience of working with archival databases

To have excellent IT skills including Microsoft Office 

To possess excellent planning and organisational skills to meet project deadlines

To have the ability and aptitude to work effectively within a small team environment

This role involves the retrieval, handling and reshelving of materials, and the ability to undertake safe manual handling is essential

 

Desirable:

 

To have experience supervising interns and/or volunteers

To have at least one years’ experience of working in a library or heritage organisation

To have experience of working with CollectionsIndex+

To have an interest in civil rights
