Blue Plaque Honours Belfast Poet and Former Library Caretaker

This week Thomas Carnduff, known as the Shipyard Poet, was honoured with a Blue Plaque placed on the Fountain Street entrance of the Linen Hall Library. Thomas worked as the Library’s resident caretaker from 1951 – 1954. The Ulster History Circle, a small, not for profit organisation that places commemorative plaques throughout Ulster, organised the event. The Linen Hall Library has announced the launch of the 2014 Michael McLaverty Short Story Award. The purpose of the award, which has run biennially from 2006, is to foster and encourage the tradition of the Irish short story. Entrants must have been born in Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland and be over 18 years of age. The prize is £2,000.
