Job Vacancy - Divided Society Project Assistant

Job Description

Contract Fixed term: from date of appointment to 31 January 2018

Location Northern Ireland Political Collection

Salary £15,000 per annum

Hours of work 36¼ hours per week

Responsible To: Project Manager

Job Purpose:

The post holder, under the direction of the Project Manager, will assist in the delivery of the ‘Divided Society’ digitisation and outreach project. In particular he/she will be responsible for all administrative duties relating to the project, some archival work, and obtaining copyright clearance for material from the Northern Ireland Political Collection which has been identified for inclusion in the project.

Ideally the successful candidate will be a team player who also has the ability to work on their own initiative. He/she will be methodical in approach, work well under time pressures, possess good interpersonal, organisational and communication skills and ideally have a keen interest in local politics. Applicants should note this role involves retrieval and reshelving of materials, and the ability to undertake safe manual handling is essential.


· To prepare and deliver correspondence seeking copyright permission

· To create an audit of the steps taken to contact each publisher and record replies from the copyright holders

· To assist with the accessioning, labelling and marking, and archival packaging and storage of returned scanning, and Northern Ireland Political Collection material

· To proof-read online content before publication

· To assist with the launch of the Divided Society resource in January 2018

· To take the minutes of Project meetings when required

· To carry out any other duties commensurate with the grade and purpose of the post

Personnel Specification:


· To be qualified to degree level in a relevant discipline

· To be proficient in Microsoft Office

· To possess excellent interpersonal, organisational and communication skills

· To have the ability and aptitude to work effectively within a small team environment

· To be able to work to deadlines


· To have good working knowledge of UK Copyright

· To have worked previously in a library or similar cultural institution

· To have archival experience

· To be able to demonstrate a proven interest in Northern Ireland politics

· To be able to deal with challenging situations where necessary
