Job Vacancy - Divided Society Sales & Marketing Officer

Contract: 6 months from August 2017

Salary: £25k pro rata

Hours of work: 18 hours per week

Responsible to: Project Manager


The Linen Hall Library has been awarded funding to digitise a section of its world renowned Northern Ireland Political Collection. The ‘Divided Society’ resource will be an online digital archive  of political journals, posters, video and audio focused on the Northern Ireland conflict and peace process from 1990 – 1998. This post will promote and market the resource leading up to its launch.

The resource is free in the UK and Ireland, and through subscription to the rest of the world. The ‘Divided Society’ archive will be an important academic resource for Universities, Institutions, Libraries, Museums and Higher Education bodies as well as individual researchers.

The resource will launch in January 2018. 


Marketing and Sales:

  • To develop a firm understanding of the resource and its pricing structure
  • To produce and circulate marketing and/or other advertising material
  • To target and contact potential purchasers in the international markets – concentrating on the US, Europe, Canada and Australia, and create a database of those contacted
  • To maintain a list of clients who pre-order resource (prior to January launch)
  • To investigate Google AdWords as a potential advertising tool to market resource
  • To collect and maintain statistics on all marketing and sales activity actioned during this contract

Public Relations:

  • To maintain a database of relevant UK/Irish media contacts and stakeholders
  • To maintain a database of publishers and individuals involved in project
  • To prepare and issue press releases and other publicity items in relation to this project
  • To maintain a full record of all media coverage
  • To promote the project and resource through the Library’s own established social media networks (Facebook/Twitter/YouTube)
  • To help organise and promote the project launch in January 2018 (see below)

January Launch:

  • To organise and oversee all publicity and marketing around the launch event

Other Duties:

  • Any other duties as appropriate

Personnel Specification:


  • To be qualified to degree level in a relevant discipline
  • To have experience working in sales and marketing
  • To be proficient with Microsoft Office
  • To have the ability and aptitude to work effectively within a small team environment
  • To have ability to organise and prioritise workload
  • To be able to work to deadlines


  • To have an MA or Diploma in Communications, Marketing, Sales or associated discipline
  • To have written articles, adverts, newsletters etc;
  • To have a demonstrable knowledge of Northern Ireland politics
  • To have experience in Library, Museum or Heritage sector
  • To be able to deal with challenging situations where necessary
  • Knowledge of digital archives and academic digital providers
