NORTHERN IRELAND POLITICAL COLLECTION SERIES WITH DR PAUL CORTORN

ENOCH POWELL AND ULSTER UNIONIST POLITICS IN THE 1970s AND 1980s

FRIDAY 9th OCTOBER, 1.00pm • YOUTUBE AND FACEBOOK BROADCAST

As Ulster Unionist MP for South Down between 1974 and 1987, Enoch Powell sought the closer integration of Northern Ireland with Great Britain. The talk discusses how this involved Powell dismissing existing strands of Ulster Unionist thinking and how, in turn, some Ulster Unionists sought to attack the intellectual foundations of Powell’s position. The talk reflects on the importance of material from the Northern Ireland Political Collection in helping to set Powell’s arguments in context.

Dr Paul Corthorn is Reader in Modern British History at Queen’s University Belfast. He is the author of Enoch Powell: Politics and Ideas in Modern Britain (Oxford, 2019).
