Theatres of Old Belfast

24th July - 11th September

In the early 1900s Belfast had a thriving theatrical scene, with venues such as The Alhambra, Empire and Theatre Royal entertaining audiences ‘twice nightly’.

Local set designer Stuart Marshall has been tracing the history of these long lost theatres and has brought them back to life in the form of handcrafted miniature models.

This exhibition contains five models of old theatres – The Alhambra Theatre, The Theatre Royal, The Empire, The Royal Hippodrome and The Ritz – alongside items from The Linen Hall’s renowned Theatre and Performing Arts Archive and footage about theatre in Belfast from the Digital Film Archive.

FREE to view in The Linen Hall’s VERTICAL GALLERY.

Stuart Marshall will deliver a talk entitled ‘Remembering Belfast’s Old Theatres’ to accompany the exhibition on 28 August at 1 pm, in which he’ll take an in-depth look at the model-making process and tell some fascinating stories about the theatres themselves.
