Imbas Forosnai / Illuminated inspiration with Dáibhidh Stiúbhard

In Ireland today, traditional singing is often joined with the notion of being a ‘vessel for the song’. In a much older Ireland, we encounter the idea of Imbas Forosnai – illuminated inspiration: a moment of spiritual interruption through which the poet might speak divine truth, and at times even glimpse the future. From keening, where the voice seems to call the dead briefly into presence, to allegorical songs in which meanings are never quite what they seem.

Established traditional singer /songwriter Dáibhidh Stiúbhard explores the esoteric undercurrent that runs through the tradition. Drawing on both historical material and his own practice, he will discuss how traditional singing continues to carry traces of a worldview in which the voice does more than tell a story – It enchants, revives and reveals.
