Hamish Henderson, Robert Burns & Music

23rd May – 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

£5.00 – £6.50
  • Hamish personally accepted the surrender of Italy during WW II
  • Bob Dylan said he wrote his ‘Times They Are A-Changin’ after being inspired by Hamish’s ‘The Freedom Come All Ye’.
  • Mandela himself flew across to Scotland twice, right after he was freed, to thank Hamish Henderson personally.
  • A new documentary has now been completed on Hamish which is now being screened widely.

Join Professor Fred Freeman of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland for an exploration of two great songsters and poets, Hamish Henderson and Robert Burns. Both men rejected arguments that Scotland was, at best, a fragmented nation lacking social and cultural wholeness and through their songwriting created a national and international vision of Scotland that brought together all its vital Scots, Gaelic and Norse cultural strands.

Drawing on recordings (from his Hamish Henderson albums and his Complete Songs of Robert Burns) and fine art illustrations, Professor Freeman will explore the achievement of these two great artists, including their strong links with this island.
