Welcome to Linen Hall Library’s Online Exhibition Page
We look forward to bringing you a varied, fascinating and stimulating series of material from our world-renowned archives.
To mark 100 years since the birth in Derry-Londonderry of the poet Robert Greacen, the Linen Hall Library has created this small online exhibition to celebrate his life and his work. A poet of the post-war era, Greacen’s peer group included Michael McLaverty, Sam Hanna Bell, Roy McFadden, John Boyd and Joseph Tomelty, which he recalled in his study Rooted in Ulster: Nine Ulster Lives (2000). These individuals feature prominently in Robert Greacen’s archive which is held by the Linen Hall Library. Greacen died in Dublin on Sunday April 13, 2008, at the age of 87. His last book, Robert Greacen: New and Selected Poems was published in 2006.
The Linen Hall Library holds the world’s largest collection of Scottish poet Robert Burns’ work and associated miscellany outside of Scotland. Former Linen Hall governor Andrew Gibson (1841 – 1931) is to thank in large part for this archive. The story behind the purchase and maintenance of the collection is fascinating and relayed here in this online exhibition.
