March Events at the Linen Hall

The creative colossus of the Yeats family is celebrated at the Linen Hall Library in March with a production entitled The Great Yeats! Remarkable Father of a Remarkable Family featuring actor Sam McCready. The play digs deep into the lives and psyches of artist John Butler Yeats and his sons, the famous writer W. B. Yeats and painter Jack B. Yeats.

Also on the calendar in March are the continuation of the Burns and Burnsiana Exhibition, our popular children’s story time, the Linen Hall reading group and more.

The March schedule is as follows:

Burns & Burnsiana Collection - Monday 1 March – Saturday 20 March/Exhibition/Free
(Continued from January) Scottish poet and lyricist Robert Burns (1759 – 1796) is celebrated worldwide. He is the best known of the poets who wrote in the Scots language. The Linen Hall Library holds the unique position of having the most comprehensive Burns collection of material outside of Scotland. We’ve delved into our archives and brought forth a fabulous array of Burns-related treasures including the inaugural Belfast edition of Burns’ first collection of poems in 1787 (a year before the foundation of the Linen Hall Library).

The Great Yeats! Remarkable Father of a Remarkable Family by Sam McCready - Wednesday and Thursday 3 & 4 March/Performance/£10 (£8 members)
Belfast born and internationally respected actor Sam McCready explores with wit and pathos the complex relationship between John Butler Yeats and his famous family.

Recent Excavations in Belfast: An Overview by Ruairi O Baoill - Wednesday 10 March at 6.30pm/Talk/Free
Ruairi O Baoill, Medieval and Post-Medieval archaeology expert, gives a fascinating account of artefacts found and excavations carried out in and around Belfast that have uncovered material dating from prehistoric to modern times.

(This talk is organised by The Belfast Natural History and Philosophical Society which was founded in 1821 to promote knowledge in arts sciences, and today, amongst other activities and projects, promotes a lecture programme based at the Linen Hall Library.)

Readings for Children - Saturday 20 March at 11.00am/Free
Children 4 – 7 years old are all invited to these popular readings that take place in our Children’s Area on the 2nd floor of the Library.

Linen Hall Reading Group - Thursday 25 March at 1.10pm/Free
Everyone is invited to join the Linen Hall’s popular reading group that meets on the last Thursday of every month. This month’s title up for discussion is Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell.

This classic novel was published in 1949 and looked ahead to a bleak, controlled world in 1984. It introduced concepts such as Big Brother and doublethink to the vernacular. Was it a warning? Or a prophecy? Come and debate.
