February at the Linen Hall Library sees the continuation of the Burns & Burnsiana Exhibition along with a packed events schedule including Irish language classes, fascinating lectures, readings for children and more…
The February schedule is as follows:
Burns & Burnsiana Collection - Monday 1 February – Saturday 20 March/Exhibition/Free (continued from January) Scottish poet and lyricist Robert Burns (1759 – 1796) is celebrated worldwide. He is the best known of the poets who wrote in the Scots language. The Linen Hall Library holds the unique position of having the most comprehensive Burns collection of material outside of Scotland. We’ve delved into our archives and brought forth a fabulous array of Burns-related treasures including the inaugural Belfast edition of Burns’ first collection of poems in 1787 (a year before the origin of the Linen Hall Library).
Introductory Ulster-Scots with Gary Blair - Tuesday 2 February – Tuesday 23 March at 4.15pm/Language Class/Free This is an eight-week course for beginners in the Ulster-Scots language.
Irish Sculpture in the Nineteenth Century by Dr Paula Murphy - Wednesday 3 February at 6.30pm/Free Are we destroying our culture? Public monuments in Dublin have been destroyed, equestrian statues blown up and the Queen Victoria monument has been removed….what is the state of our sculptures? And what does this say about our society today? Dr. Paula Murphy is Senior Lecturer, School of Art History & Cultural Policy, University College Dublin.
(This talk is organised by The Belfast Natural History and Philosophical Society which was founded in 1821 to promote knowledge in arts sciences, and today, amongst other activities and projects, promotes a lecture programme based at the Linen Hall Library.)
Advanced Irish with Dr Stiofan O Direain - Thursday 4 February – Thursday 25 March at 4.15pm/Language Class/Free Dr Stiofan O Direain takes advanced Irish speakers through their language paces in this eight-week course.
Beginners Irish with Niall MacLochlainn - Friday 5 February – Thursday 26 March at 4.15pm/Language Class/Free This popular beginner’s course runs again for eight weeks.
Readings for Children - Saturday 20 February at 11.00am/Free Children 4 – 7 years old are all invited to these popular readings that take place in our Children’s Area on the 2nd floor.
Linen Hall Book Sale - Monday 22 February – Saturday 27 February at 9.45am – 5.15pm (Saturday until 3.45pm). The Linen Hall Library continues its popular book sales as it clears out its redundant and replicate stock. Bargains galore!
Linen Hall Reading Group - Thursday 25 February at 1.10pm/Free Everyone is invited to join the Linen Hall’s popular reading group that meets on the last Thursday of every month. This month’s title up for discussion is A Far Cry From Kensington by Muriel Spark.
Mrs Hawkins, a fat young war widow, worked for a mad, near-bankrupt publisher in 1950s London. Looking back on shady literary doings and a deadly enemy, anonymous letters, blackmail and suicide, the now thin and successful Mrs Hawkins recalls how she came through it all.
