December at the Linen Hall Library continues an exhibition by NI artist/photographer Arthur Campbell. Also on the calendar is a children’s reading with special guest Santa dropping in, a talk about the Italian community in NI and more…
The December schedule is as follows:
Arthur Campbell, Artist and Photographer - Tuesday 1 December - Saturday 19 December/Exhibition/Free The Linen Hall Library celebrates the birth centenary of Ulster artist and photographer Arthur Campbell, noted for his ‘remarkable perception’. He was one of a family of artists which included his brother George and mother Gretta Bowen. Arthur left school at 15 after his father died and took a job in a Belfast printing firm. He attended night school and eventually secured the job of Advertising Manager at the Harry Ferguson (Motors) company where he worked for many years. During his time there he designed the well–known Massey Ferguson badge which is still seen on tractors today and is highly collectable. In his spare time he was a keen photographer and painter whose pictures captured the atmosphere of Northern Ireland from the 30s to the changing ‘60s.
The exhibition will be hung in the Library’s Vertical Gallery.
Unhappy and at Home: the Italian Community in Northern Ireland by Leo D’Agostino - Wednesday 2 December 6.30pm/Talk/Free The Italian consul in Belfast and former head of English at St Mary’s University College, Leo D’Agostino, will talk about the history of Italian integration into Northern Irish culture.
