LINEN HALL LIBRARY CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE WITH CHILDREN’S ART
The Linen Hall Library celebrates the United Nations’ International Day of Peace (21 September) with an inspirational peace mural created by Little Flower Girls’ School in Belfast. The massive 3.5 x 7.8 m painting was produced as part of the international Kids’ Guernica movement which sees children in all parts of the world produce paintings to promote peace and international understanding.
Also in September – the last chance to see the Cave Hill Diamond, a talk on novelist/broadcaster Sam Hanna Bell by his son Fergus, a Seamus Heaney/Michael Longley birthday display, and the ever popular Linen Hall Reading Group.
The September schedule is as follows:
Belfast Gems – Cave Hill and the Diamond, 1 – 12 September/Exhibition/Free Don’t miss the final chance to catch a glimpse of the famous Cave Hill Diamond which has been on display throughout the summer in the Library. After disappearing in the early 1900s the Diamond was re-discovered in a private collection three years ago and presented to the Linen Hall Library in June. The exhibition examines the facts and folklore around the Diamond and the incredible journey the Diamond has taken since its discovery on the Cave Hill in the late 1890s.
As part of the experience, there’s also an exhibition of Northern Irish artist Raymond Piper’s work. Born in England, Piper spent many years in Belfast and particularly loved the Cave Hill area of which he produced many studies.
Sam Hanna Bell: Remembering My Father – by Fergus Bell, Wednesday 9 September/6.30pm/Lecture/Free He was born in Scotland, but Sam Hanna Bell lived most of his life in Belfast as a novelist and BBC producer. His most recognised work is most probably December Bride, about Ulster rural life. Because of its shocking content, it was banned in the south of Ireland throughout the 1950s. This year marks the centenary of his birth and the Linen Hall is planning a number of events to celebrate his contribution to our literary heritage. In this event, Sam’s son Fergus Hanna Bell, talks about his famous father and the wealth of work he produced.
European Heritage Open Day, Saturday 12 September/Tour/11.00am and 2.00pm/Free Northern Ireland’s foremost heritage event takes place on the second weekend in September each year. Many people have taken advantage of the free entry to buildings, and events that occur throughout the country, during the weekend. The Linen Hall Library is offering two free tours of our unique building and an introduction to our many collections.
European Heritage Open Days are organised by Northern Ireland Environment Agency. For more information visit www.ni-environment.gov.uk.
Heaney & Longley Birthday Display, Monday 21 September – Saturday 10 September/Display/Free To celebrate the 70th birthdays of two of the most famous Irish writers of this generation, Seamus Heaney and Michael Longley, the Linen Hall will exhibit a number of exclusive Library items such as signed works, special edition collections and other items of interest.
Belfast Kids’ Guernica Exhibition, Monday 21 September – Saturday 26 September/Free Belfast Kid’s Guernica is an international project for children in different places of the world to create peace paintings on huge canvases the same size as Picasso's "Guernica", 1937 (3.5 m × 7.8m), which protested against the brutality of bombing in the town of Gernika during the Spanish civil war.
Little Flower Girls’ School in Belfast was approached to get involved and created a fabulous painting that will be displayed in the Linen Hall Library’s Performance Area.
Linen Hall Reading Group, Thursday 24 September/1.10pm/Free All are welcome to come along to the popular Linen Hall Reading Group. This month’s title up for discussion is Get a Life by Nadine Gordimer.
