FOUNDERS’ DAY APPEAL
“No institution in Northern Ireland has done more to promote enlightenment
and represent a better future for all our citizens.”
Nobel Laureate and Linen Hall Library Member, Seamus Heaney
On 13th May 2008, the Library celebrated its 220th birthday, an opportunity to rededicate ourselves to the vision of our pioneer members.
Today the Linen Hall Library plays a key role locally, nationally and internationally in the field of Irish and Local Studies. We hold unique collections such as the Northern Ireland Political Collection, the Theatre and Performing Arts Archive, the Languages of Ulster and Genealogy Collections. As a library and as a wider arts and cultural centre, the Linen Hall is at the heart of creating new opportunities for our community and society.
The Linen Hall Library is so firmly and fondly established in the pride of its members that its continuance in good health may too easily be taken for granted. However, as the Library preserves the past, meets the challenges of the present and prepares for the future, the support of our friends is essential.
Accordingly, I am asking you to support our Founders’ Day Appeal. We have identified three areas which need to be addressed for the future care of the Library and to enable us to provide the levels of service and guardianship expected in the 21st century. All contributions will be used for these key priorities: a) preservation of our unique resources, b) enhanced accommodation and access for our extended collections and c) support for the Theatre and Performing Arts Archive.
We are asking you and all of our valued members to consider giving a minimum of £50, though gifts of any size are most welcome. We will report regularly on our progress and hope that you will see both the visible differences and avail yourself of the enhanced services and opportunities that your contribution makes.
Our members are the cornerstone of the Linen Hall Library. On behalf of the Board of Governors and Library team I thank you for your involvement and support in keeping the ideals of our founders alive and relevant.
Marnie O’Neill, OBE
